I have been a patient at the Merle Cancer Care Center for a year now, and though I have little to compare it to (thankfully) my experience has been an extremely positive one. My treatment is currently going well, but this is not really about that; this concerns the facility and most of all the staff. The people there, from receptionists to schedulers to the doctors, nurses and volunteers have all treated me with incredible efficiency, compassion, dignity and humor. It is very much a team effort, and the home team is a real winner. If one absolutely has to have cancer, Anacortes shines brightly.
I was admitted to Emergency Services mid last May after experiencing symptoms that, although not usually indicative of a pending heart event, were of sufficient concern that I felt they should be addressed. From the moment I arrived at the ER I felt at ease and safe. This was as the result of the alacritous response by the Island Hospital Emergency Services Team.
I am happy to report that early intervention by Island Hospital Emergency Services prevented my having a heart damaging event. Moreover, following up with Island Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program has resulted in a full recovery as expected by the Cardiac Surgeon and my Cardiologist.

On October 13th Arden went to the Island Hospital ER with child and low blood pressure. The ER was slammed that day with patients. Regardless, the ER intake was smooth and in less than 20 minutes the triage person came out and checked Arden’s vitals resulting in her being placed in a monitoring/exam cubicle and starting the diagnostic process. Saturday the 14th, after being stabilized, she was moved to a second floor patient room and discharged Sunday afternoon. The professionalism and timeliness of the entire Island Hospital attending staff was “over the top.” Arden is now home in recovery mode. Kudos to Island Hospital!!!
I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the excellent care that Island Hospital has provided for my late husband and me during the last thirty years. Each and every experience has been positive. My latest hospitalization for knee replacement surgery in January adds another shining star to my list. Please extend my “thank you” to all your staff members. I will always be grateful for their service and commitment.
I am caring for a close friend of advanced age (she will be 100 years old next month). This afternoon, I stopped by the hospital with some complex questions about medical and caregiver ethics. I was directed to the Resource Center. Although I walked in with no appointment and with no prior relationship to Island Hospital, the staff there spent considerable time answering questions, listening to my concerns, and suggesting resources and creative ideas for resolving (issues regarding) the person for whom I am caring.
Thank you for funding the Island Health Resource Center. I now know that Island Hospital will help me navigate complex ethical, medical, and end-of-life issues to the best interests of my friend while also seeing that she has appropriate medical care. It is very obvious from my conversation with IHRC staff that Island Hospital takes the dignity of its patients very seriously.
